Stephen Tyng Mather High School is a public 4–year high school located in the West Ridge neighborhood on the north side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. Opened in 1959, Mather is named in honor of Stephen Mather, an industrialist and conservationist who became the first director of the National Park Service (1917–29). ==Background== Mather is a neighborhood high school with a college preparatory emphasis. More than 75% of students speak a language other than English at home. Mather's Bilingual/English as a Second Language (ESL) program is central to the school's curriculum. The faculty and staff reflect the multicultural backgrounds of Mather's Students and serve as translators, role models, and mentors. Mather is committed to creating an environment that fosters student achievement. Honors-level classes are available for qualified students.
